There has been a moving image circulating of a woman lighting her Chanukah candles before the outbreak of World War II in Germany. They fought for their identity, and united the people in doing so. Just as the Maccabees fought bravely against the ancient Greeks – who weren’t trying to physically destroy us but to Hellenise us and disconnect us from our religious practise. Our default position would be to run and hide our Jewishness, to be more like everyone else, but the opposite it true. If that’s the case, then the real antidote to antisemitism is a mindful and deliberate increase in Jewish identity and pride. Those who hate us are sent as a stark reminder about who the real enemies are. Sometimes we fight one another over politics, religion, tradition, and even good old baseless faribels. When we stray from our traditions and heritage or when we hate one another, Hashem reminds us who we are and who our real enemies are. Some Jewish rabbis and scholars suggest that antisemitism exists as Hashem’s values-clarification mechanism. Yet that remains the pattern, even today. One would assume we would be praised and thanked, not derided and reviled. Our impact far surpasses our meagre numbers. Jews have done more to advance their countries of sojourn in the diaspora than any other minority in the history of mankind. Rationale defying, and simply beyond any reasonability. And so is born the essence of antisemitism – Illogical to the core. Why in the world would patriotic Egyptian Jews turn on their country of birth after 200 years of naturalisation? They wouldn’t. He claims that should Egypt be attacked by foreign invaders, the Jews would join forces with the enemies and revolt against the Egyptians. Pharoah somehow manages to convince the Egyptian people that their successful and fully enculturated Jewish Egyptians neighbours are a threat to national security. I heard once from local scholar Cecil Steinhauer that the first time we encounter systemic antisemitism in the Torah is in the context of the slavery of Egypt. We have a tradition that the first time something, a word or a concept, appears in the Torah is the paradigm that describes the essence of that item. It has been ever present, and it merely mutates as we traverse the passage of time. There are few societal ills as ancient and as virulent as antisemitism.

Austen’s story chronicles Emma’s growth beyond silliness and selfishness, but it’s also a celebration of froth, anchored by a character whom the author thought “no one but myself will much like.” There’s a reason the book mapped so neatly onto the materialistic Valley girls of Amy Heckerling’s Clueless (forever the masterpiece of modernized Austen adaptations)-it manages to wrap sympathy and satire into one delightful narrative. In the thick of this tricky environment is Emma, a 21-year-old social butterfly who spends her days making friends, calming the nerves of her doting but agitated father (Bill Nighy), and trying to sort the people around her into whatever romantic pairings she thinks might catch. Knightley (Johnny Flynn) is looked at askance when he dares to walk outside rather than travel by carriage. This is a place where politeness trumps loud displays of emotion, a bottled society that is easy to scandalize-to the extent that the individualistic Mr. De Wilde doesn’t inject Emma or its atmosphere with the gloomy, windswept passion of later decades, as Wright did for his Pride & Prejudice. It looks like a bespoke wedding cake, a series of fine estates in the rolling English countryside, each bursting with manicured rooms painted in different pastel shades. The setting de Wilde conjures is therefore appropriately delicate and exacting. It’s a world where proper dress and good manners are paramount, where characters announce their entire personalities just by walking into a room, and where cutting insults and deeply personal observations can nestle within the most aimless small talk. That makes her a smart choice to recreate Austen’s fictional town of Highbury, the bucolic community that Emma Woodhouse (played by Anya Taylor-Joy) presides over like a gossipy, petty dictator. Either way, the title card is a neat preview of what follows: a rather routine translation of Austen’s work, told with just enough flair and attention to detail to make it stand out.ĭe Wilde’s background is in photography and music videos she has built a formidable reputation over the decades for imagery that is stark and indelible. The opening credits present the title with an ostentatious period- EMMA.-perhaps suggesting that this will be the final cinematic word on the 1815 novel, or maybe just winking at the film’s status as a period piece. In the past 13 years, only Whit Stillman’s terrific Love & Friendship, based on one of Austen’s least known works, has really connected.Īll of which is to say that it is high time for Austen to return to the big screen, and Autumn de Wilde’s Emma is evidence of the familiar charm that can come with such a project. But recent years have featured more glancing hits-a half-hearted Austen biopic, a movie about an Austen book club, another about an Austen theme park. Yes, almost all of the celebrated author’s works have been committed to film at one point or another a boom began in the ’90s and ran into the early 2000s, yielding such memorable efforts as Ang Lee’s Sense and Sensibility, Douglas McGrath’s Emma, Patricia Rozema’s Mansfield Park, and Joe Wright’s Pride & Prejudice. This might sound like a ludicrous complaint, but moviegoers have been bereft of Jane Austen adaptations of late. Doing things correctly off the block goes a long way to learning things on your own, so even a couple months of private instruction can really help you understand what you're doing and build a firm foundation to keep going on your own. When it comes to tuning a clarinet, there is a wide array of ways to do it, including using applications and hardware, and one may ask, which is the best way to use a tuner for a clarinet? You really should consider trying to find a teacher if you can. Something that will help you blow, and help you adjust the pitch to counter the built-in pitch tendencies of the instrument. One thing you can do to help yourself is try to get a good "setup" - mouthpiece, reed, ligature. You're going to have to work quite hard to counter its inherent problems. Maybe check notes other than open G and see if they're also flipping between two notes or if they're more consistent than the G.Īlso, if your Clarinet came with two barrels, make sure you're using the shorter one.Ĭheap low-cost Clarinets unfortunately are notorious for having substantial tuning problems, so the fact that you've got an ambiguous intonation on the G is not helpful to anything. That said, also make sure you didn't somehow get a Clarinet in A. Play long tones and work on getting those notes to register close to straight-needle for as long as you can. If open G is showing E a lot, your embouchure is probably too loose. It's worth noting that you don't have to be straight-needle perfect as a beginner, just get close and work most on getting good intonation on longer, held notes. Over time, you'll want to develop your ear so you're not relying on the tuner. Tuner-practice is a good and valid technique, especially if you're playing alone and without a teacher. If it bothers you, you can download an app for your phone, or go to and use the "Settings" interface to change "Concert Pitch" to "Bb 3". Transposition is a bit rare in low-cost discrete tuners (i.e. It's a perfectly fine brand, but odds are your tuner is just fine. Oh man, you have a ball of things to address here: If I'm playing E thats a Gb right, so I'm flat? Last thing if my clarinet is pretty cheap and basic should it still play all the notes correctly?Įdit: No I mean Flat. So if I'm playing E thats me being sharp with my breath or embrouchure or something? I did know Bb clarinets were a whole step down aswell, tuner confused me! Lol I started to think the E was correct and was adjusting like testing the barrel length to get a nice green E for open G. I only been playing a week though.īut often it does show F. An open G shows E a lot of the time on the tuner, which I just got. My ears aren't trained I don't really know what I'm playing, didn't realise it wasn't the right notes. I don't have a teacher, is playing infront of a tuner something you do for each note of a song when you are learning? The tuner has pitch but its just adjusts the Hz from 440 to something else. If you have a preference, you should try to figure out what the app or device will show you before purchase - user manuals are often available online if you search something like "Korg CA-1 User Manual", which can help you find out details like this. An in-line tuner pedal I just bought for my non-Clarinet work has a firmware setting that lets you choose flats, sharps, or a predetermined mix. What is shown on a digital app-tuner these days depends to an extent on the bias and background of the coders - Strings players are more likely to play in sharp-keys, so an app built by violinists will tend to use sharps, while an app built by band-people would likely use more flats. I used to have a device-tuner that'd show all flats because that was the symbol they built into the LCD screen, but at the same time I had a bandmate whose tuner showed all sharps. Regarding sharp-versus-flat display, it's all over the place. I'd recommend being comfortable doing the conversion in your head, since your teacher/director/conductor may call concert-pitch notes sometimes and ask "who has this note", but on a daily basis using the tech shift is fine. After 20 years I really don't think twice about "play G, see F", it just happens. Personally, I do the conversion myself, but that's a choice, not a mandate. If you have a physical tuner, check the manual, see if it lists "transposition" or "pitch" as an option. It's relatively common for digital tuners to allow pitch transposition these days I think most of the tuner-apps I've seen for phones have it buried in settings somewhere. Embedment depth at less than minimum embedment will decrease the holding values, or result in no holding values at all. Minimum embedment is the distance that the anchor body is installed in the concrete after the Red Head® wedge anchor has been expanded. Even though the working part of the Red Head® wedge anchor is larger, the threaded part of the anchor is equal to the designated diameter, i.e., a 3/8” Red Head® wedge anchor uses a 3/8” nut.Įach diameter of Red Head® wedge anchor has a specific minimum embedment depth for which it must be installed in the concrete in order to meet the minimum holding values. For example, a 3/8” Red Head® anchor will require a 7/16” hole in the fixture for it to be inserted through the hole while the fixture is in place. In other words, the wedge anchor measures larger than the diameter that it is called. If the Red Head® wedge anchor is installed with the fixture in place, it is important to know that the diameter of the Redhead wedge anchor is larger than the designated diameter. If the item that is being fastened has holes in it for attachment, the Red Head wedge anchor chosen must fit through the holes. An engineer that has calculated the values needed to correctly determine the specific diameter of Red Head® wedge anchor to use may specify the holding value requirements. The diameter of wedge anchor chosen for any particular application depends on holding value requirements and the size of the hole in the fixture that is being fastened. For applications where the Red Head® wedge anchor is submerged in chemicals and water, the 316 stainless steel Red Head® wedge anchor may be the best choice. The 304 stainless steel may be the best choice when the anchor will be in wet environments. In applications where moisture is present then the hot-dipped galvanized should be considered. Zinc plated Red Head® wedge anchor can be used. If the application is indoors with no moisture present then the The Red Head® wedge anchor is manufactured in different materials and plated differently to meet different application requirements. Do you wet a beauty blender with warm or cold water? Hello! Magazine enlisted Benefit MUA Lisa Potter Dixon to share the definitive guide to using a beauty blender and her advice is pretty game-changing.The Original Beautyblender can be used wet or dry for application, contouring, blending, setting, and baking. This way it won't soak up any excess product, and instead will transfer your foundation smoothly and seamlessly to the skin. If you'd like a lighter base, run it under a tap before using it each time and then squeeze out the excess water so that you're left with a damp and plump sponge, before dipping it into your product. A great makeup sponge will be easy to clean and keep dry to avoid product buildup and bacteria. "Often, liquid and cream products look streaky when you use a brush, but sponges give you more control to pat the product evenly into the skin.” This factor is super important. The best beauty blenders and makeup sponges of 2022: Powders are better applied with makeup brushes, but liquid and cream products blend best when applied with a sponge," says Loiz. Trust me-these will not only rival but beat your current old favorite makeup brush. Ahead, the 13 best beauty sponges and beauty blenders for your every makeup need. But over the last few years, genius makeup artists and cosmetic companies (ahem, Beautyblender) have seen the true potential of old-school foam sponges and have transformed them into the quality makeup blenders you're obsessed with today-the ones that can buff, blend, and smooth your foundation, blush, contour, highlight, and more into a legit airbrushed finish. I remember a time when they were just the freebies that came in your makeup compact that you tossed out with the box. Makeup sponges and beauty blenders haven't always had the street cred they have today. Once wet, it expands making it even more bouncy and soft, for a totally seamless finish. The point is they're great, like the best ever, because the sponge is super soft and highly absorbent, so it always dispenses an even amount of product. The OG makeup sponge, if we had a pound for every time we bought one of these we'd have, well, probably 15 pounds. While a beauty blender will help you achieve perfectly finished makeup, it's important to keep it clean, too. "They can also lay down powder more densely and with more precision (for baking for example) than a brush." A dampened sponge can blend foundation more effectively and evenly than fingers or brushes", says Martin. You could even set your base by spritzing your beauty blender with a setting mist and gently patting onto the skin. For example, a saturated sponge will create a sheer finish on the skin, while an ever-so-slightly damp sponge, or a dry sponge, will give fuller coverage. Most are best used damp, and how wet your sponge is will determine the overall look. Sponges also allow you to control the type of finish you achieve. While some brushes can absorb product, a beauty blender (or make-up sponge) allows you to build layers delicately – and with precision.
